A symbol of the gratitude of the American people for every Marine who has given his or her life to defend the United States, U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial is also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial because of its famous statue. The memorial's statue depicts the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima in 1945, a victorious image that has great resonance in the country. Sculptor Felix W. de Weldon used the original image, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph by Joe Rosenthal, to create this statue. Weldon also arranged for three survivors of the flag raising to pose for his sculpture, which was officially unveiled in 1954. Powerful memorial to our Marines. Easy to find and park. No crowds. There were some Marines changing out the flag when we arrived because the flag was worn. Great to see them taking care of this...

What a tribute to the all American hero. Take a walk from Arlington National Cemetery and the grave markers set the tone for this amazing statue. The heroic touch by these young soldiers so many years ago is a lasting reminder of what the flag stands for. I also love that this memorial can be seen for miles around. It’s a little off the beaten path and after so many years of visiting DC this is my first time, and definitely a favorite.

Quite an impressive statute. I was surprised on how large it was. Getting to it was a little confusing at first. I wasn't sure exactly what turn to take, but once we circled, I saw my mistake. There is quite a bit of free parking all around. Took the kids on Memorial Day to view it. There were a lot of historical markers that you could read about our Armed Forces or even push a button, and there was a recording you could listen to. There was a large grassy field where you could admire the satute. The story is amazing to learn about. It's not a all day thing but you could spend a few quality hours here and it's well worth it.
