Create an itinerary including Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam
Originally founded in 1638, Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam hosts rare and exotic plants in one of the oldest facilities of its kind in the world. After falling on hard times during the latter half of the 20th century, the garden rebounded to become one of Amsterdam's most popular tourist sites. Wander the themed pathways through the collection of over 6,000 resident plants, including a large cycad collection and several specimens hundreds of years old. You'll see some of the same plants, such as coffee and palms, which helped the Dutch East India Company spur its respective industries in South America and the East Indies. Afterward stop for a bite at the terraced cafe, which offers coffee and snacks. • Loved seeing the older plants and trees, and reading the history behind the medicinal herb garden. Lots of shady spots which were welcome on the sunny day we visited.

  • Genuinely incredible gardens with well manicured and loved plants. The small signs in front of all plants are abundant but only in Dutch. Larger signs are in both English and Dutch. They do have an app, brochures and were available for questions. The store was lovely, but had nothing with the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam name on it which was the only thing keeping us from buying souvenirs. Highly recommend!
  • Loads of beautiful healthy plants to see here as you'd expect! Its well laid out with pathways to follow but when there are more than a few people it can feel crowded so try to go during quieter times. Some really good examples of tropical plants on show throughout and there is also an outside garden with additional displays
