Experience wildlife at ARTIS, which supports an aquarium, planetarium, arboretum, and the country's oldest zoo. The zoo was founded in 1838 and holds 27 historic buildings that are wonderful examples of 19th-century architecture. The park's name is short for "natura artis magistra," (nature is the teacher of art and science). Learn about art and science through exhibits with more than 900 species of animals and 200 species of trees. Watch giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and more, along with marine life, at the on-site aquarium. Excellent urban zoo well-worth the cost of admission! The monkey/bat/lizard house was a favorite to which we kept returning, and all the exhibits were well thought-out and interesting. The aquarium is fun, and there are plenty of different dining options. The playground over by the elephants was a huge hit for adults and kids. We will definitely return!
Surprisingly nice. Beautiful zoo with a lot of different animals. You can walk in some exhibits where small animals run free, like the smallest monkey species in the world, or another exhibit with butterflies flying around and occasionally landing on you. We really enjoyed the feeding time show with the sea lions. There was also some staff on site telling us and teaching us about the animals, which was very cool.
