Vaduz Castle, Vaduz

#1 of 50 in Things to do in Liechtenstein
Castle · Tourist Spot
Discover the centuries-old tradition and history of the Liechtenstein Princely family at Vaduz Castle. The official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein, the castle sits on a hillside 120 m (394 ft) above the town. The previous owners, the Counts of Werdenberg-Sargans, presumably built it as a fortress in the 12th century. The castle is closed to visitors, but you can walk from the main street of Vaduz up to the castle along the Princess Gardens. Or take a guided tour of Vaduz, learn how the castle came into the ownership of the Princely family, and hear what role Napoleon played in the country's history. • Came but couldn't go in. I came in late afternoon, it was beautiful with these autumn colours and spectacular views over the castle. There is also a hiking trail nearby, although I couldn't complete.....  more »
  • Great Castle, can only see it from the outside though. Can go for a nature walk nearby which is lovely too It's a must see when being there  more »
  • We wouldn't have stopped here had it not been on our way from the Austrian Alps to the Italian Lakes, but it was a pretty 15 minute stop. It is not far off the main road. The king and queen were home, so there were no tours. Just a few quick pics from the outside of this beautiful castle and we were on our way.
  • Always wanted to visit Vaduz and the very well-known Vaduz castle. The walk up to the castle from the town is pleasant, but the town is very small with not necessarily a huge amount to see. There is currently quite a lot of work going on the paths and some are closed. A BMW had blocked one path by parking on it which wasn't ideal either. I did however enjoy the amount of information provided about the history of Liechtenstein and the castle as the walk progressed, very informative. Reaching the castle it looks nice, but possibly not quite as spectacular as predicted. However, the views down the valley did not disappoint. I think it is certainly worth a visit but more for the walk and the views than the castle. I was really tempted to continue the walk up into the forest.
