Both a protected reserve and a temple complex, Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary shelters several hundred long-tailed Balinese macaques. The monkeys get their nourishment from the forest staff, which feeds them sweet potatoes several times a day. Though you can't give the monkeys peanuts, cookies, or other snacks, you can purchase bananas if you want to feed the little ones yourself--just be prepared for a lot of attention from these cheeky creatures, and stow away valuables and shiny objects. This jungle sanctuary contains three temples, allegedly constructed in the 14th century. Keep in mind you can enter sacred sections of the temples only if you wear traditional praying clothes. Stop by the forest office near the main entrance, which accepts donations and provides detailed information about the sanctuary's history and significance. It's my first experience where I fed monkeys and took them on my shoulders. I am very scared of monkeys but the staff working here encourage me for it...It's an unforgettable experience.

There's a reason why this place is one of the most visited attractions in Bali. It's great fun, the staff are good and the monkeys are amazing. They can appear slightly scary at first but keep calm and don't look at them in the eyes. I'd recommend coming early in the morning to avoid any crowds, and enjoy an hour or so observing the amusing creatures.

Must visit when you are in Bali whether you are traveling solo or with friends/family. Big beautiful forest area to observe adorable monkeys walk, swing, or just playing with their mates around you. If you are lucky, they will sitting on your shoulder - keep remain calm. If you are not sure, keep phone, glasses, anything bling inside your bag. Wear comfortable shoes / sandals to walk all around the areas. Whenever possible come in the morning to avoid crowds. In April 2022, estimates there are around 2200 monkeys there. The guides in the sites are friendly and helpful. 100% recommended.
