A German Waffen-SS company surrounded Oradour-sur-Glane on June 10, 1944, and within hours killed 642 people, including women and children, and razed the village. After the war, French president Charles de Gaulle ordered that the village not be rebuilt on the site of the massacre. Instead it would be maintained as an everlasting remembrance of the cruelty of the Nazi occupation and a memorial to those who died. Near the entrance is a museum. Songs, poems, and videos from all over the world have immortalized the destruction of this quaint French town, known as the "martyred village." • A very moving place, When you consider the atrocity that occurred here to innocent people by the vilest of individuals who mainly escaped any justice.
