Chateau de Murol, Murol

4.4
#1 of 53 in Historic Sites in Puy-de-Dome
Castle · Tourist Spot
As the first castle built on a basalt volcanic rock outcrop in the 12th century, Chateau de Murol provided surveillance of several roads overlooking what is now the town of Murol. It was reinforced in the 14th century by Guillaume de Sam who built the keep, a second chapel, and the eastern buildings. The inner castle boasts 10 m (33 ft) high walls built on a basalt base. Next to the keep connected to a smaller tower by a curtain wall, there are two chapels from the 13th and the 15th centuries. A ramp leads to a door decorated with Murol arms and the crest of the d'Estaing family. View remains of the gallery, kitchen, bakery, and several outbuildings; displays of medieval martial arts in the lower courtyard; and also a sound and light show about life in a medieval castle. • Murol is a must-see for the area along with the nearby Eglise St-Nectaire. The combo gives a great sense of medieval secular and religious life. And if the kids can’t stand another church, they will.....  more »

  • Nice castle and the jousting is really very very well done. Much of the content is delivered in person by guides in costume, which is also very well done but obviously you benefit most from this if your French can keep up. There is a small brochure in English, but this is quite limited. There are some computer tablets for kids which deliver great content in English, but there aren't many of these and so they are over subscribed. The way into the castle is steep, so I suspect those with restricted mobility might struggle. Also much of the castle is only accessible by small, steep stairs. My mine problem with the castle was that it is quite small. We paid 24 EUR for three paying visitors (those under ten are free, which is good). We spent about an hour there. With more multi language content we would have spent longer there, which would have made the trip better value.
  • Beautiful well renovated Chateau. The guided tour in French- not sure if they offer one in English- was fun and instructive. Very knowledgeable guide. Would definitely recommend it.
