One of Europe’s most beautiful canyons, Les Gorges du Verdon is about 25 km (15.5 mi) long and up to 700 m (2,296 ft) deep. The River Verdon, known for its turquoise color, carved out the gorge. At the end of the canyon, the river flows into artificial Lac de Sainte-Croix. Drive around the canyon's rim, rent kayaks, or hike. Rock climbers enjoy the high limestone walls, which are suitable for multi-pitch climbing. Trekkers can choose from 1,500 routes, ranging from 20 m to over 400 m (65 ft to 1,312 ft). We drove around the Verdin Gorge area during early October and took our time enjoying the fall colors and stopping at most viewpoints for over four hours so we only touched the surface of this gorgeous (pun intended :) ) area. Not many cars were on the road during our visit and the water level appeared to be very low.
