Place d'Armes, Montreal

#53 of 626 in Things to do in Montreal
Monument · Hidden Gem · Landmark
Watched over by the proud statue of Montreal's founder, Paul de Chomedey, Place d'Armes buzzes with history and is the second oldest public space in the city. When first developed in 1693 the square regularly staged various military events, it then became a hay and wood market and later around 1836, developed into a plush Victorian garden. Located in Old Montreal, the square provides a perfect starting point for a walking tour of some of the city's historic sights, including the Notre-Dame Basilica, Canada's first bank-- The Bank of Montreal, and the oldest building in Montreal, the Saint Sulpice Seminary.
