Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda called Las grutas de Ongamira the saddest place in the world because its somber colonial history. A series of large caves and natural overhangs, this site is home to many nesting birds and walking routes, which reveal plentiful geological features and unimpeded vistas. Archaeological discoveries in the caves have been dated back 5,000 years, with scrapers, necklaces, and mortars among the artifacts on display in the onsite museum. In 1574, Spanish conquerors slaughtered thousands of native people here in one of the greatest tragedies of the colonial era.
