The Teatro Colón (Spanish: Columbus Theatre) is the main opera house in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is considered one of the ten best opera houses in the world by National Geographic. According to a survey carried out by the acoustics expert Leo Beranek among leading international opera and orchestra directors, the Teatro Colón has the room with the best acoustics for opera and the second best for concerts in the world.Work out when and for how long to visit Teatro Colón and other Buenos Aires attractions using our handy Buenos Aires trip builder tool.
The present Colón replaced an original theatre which opened in 1857. Towards the end of the century, it became clear that a new theatre was needed, and after a 20-year process, the present theatre opened on 25 May 1908, with Giuseppe Verdi's Aïda.
The Teatro Colón was visited by the foremost singers and opera companies of the time, who would sometimes go on to other cities including Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
After this period of huge international success, the theatre's decline became clear and plans were made for massive renovations. After an initial start of works to restore the landmark in 2005, the theatre was closed for refurbishment from October 2006 to May 2010. It re-opened on 24 May 2010, with a programme for the 2010 season.

We made reservations online for a guided tour in English at 11 am. It was fairly easy to find one of the two entrances where we waited until told to line up. Our guide was pleasant but a bit...

This is an awesome Opera House and Ballet Theatre, ranked among the finest in the world. The great hall has perfect acoustic. The history of how it was built, taking 16 years and under the leadership of 3 architects, was most intriguing. Marbles of specific colours for various parts of the main entrance, stairs, railings, walls, etc., were imported from different countries in Europe. Beautiful painted ceilings and chandeliers helped to showcase the grandeur of the opera house. It is clearly an iconic landmark of Buenos Aires and worth seeing for any visitor to this city.

Breathtaking. Magnificent. Wonderful. Astonishing. Stunning Incredible. I'm getting out of compliments for this place because it's simply fabulous! The architecture is mind-blowing and the acoustic is pretty awesome. They even have kinda like a bar area where you can order wine, whisky, champagne, beverages and they even sell alfajores and sandwiches. You can also book a table. If you are visiting Buenos Aires then you MUST visit this theatre. Buy your tickets at least one week in advance, the locals are passionate about their culture and the tickets tend to sold out relatively fast, so expect to see this theatre completely full. The whole experience was magical and beautiful, I'm sure you'll love every single second of your time here.
